privacy.
last updated 30 October 2026
the short version. an account is optional. without one, your songs, recordings and settings stay in your own browser. if you sign in, they're also kept on our server in Australia so your devices stay in step, until you delete them or your account. we don't sell anything about you, and we don't show ads. a few things do leave your device, and they're all listed below.
who we are.
strumble. (strumble.app) is made and run by ink. interactive, a digital agency in Melbourne, Australia. questions about privacy go to [email protected].
what stays on your device.
everything you make in strumble. is kept in your browser's own storage on the device you use: the songs you capture, write or import, their recordings, your lists, your practice history and your settings (light or dark, left-handed, line delay and the like). we can't see it, and it isn't copied to us. it stays until you delete it in the app or clear your browser's data. another browser or device won't have it.
the microphone, browser audio, the tuner and play along all listen on your device, and turning a recording into chords and tab happens there too. your audio isn't uploaded to read it. the song sheet, MIDI files and photos read without AI are made on your device as well.
if you used strumble. at its old address (inkinteractive.com.au/projects/fretline), moving your songs across copies them from that page to this one inside your browser. nothing goes through our server.
what leaves your device.
- when you share a song. the share button, and copy all links. for every song in a list, upload each song's chart and its recording to our server so the link can open them on another device. adding songs from links downloads them the same way. anyone with the link can open it. shared songs are deleted after about ninety days. the song's name is also looked up on Apple's public iTunes search, to find cover art for the link's preview; only the name is sent.
- when you import from Google Drive. you sign in with Google in Google's own window, and strumble. asks only for the files you pick (the "drive.file" permission), never the rest of your Drive. the files you pick are downloaded straight into your browser. we don't keep them, your Google sign-in or your Google details on our server.
- when you read a photo with AI. on import, "read it with AI." sends that photo of your song sheet through our server to Anthropic, whose AI (Claude) reads it and sends back the song as text. it only happens when you tap that button; the reader in your browser sends nothing. our server doesn't keep the photo, and counts reads per address (kept as a scrambled code, for a day) to limit how many can be made. Anthropic handles the photo under its own commercial terms and doesn't train its models on it. don't photograph anything private on the same page.
- when you name a song. when you analyse a recording or import a sheet with a name on it, strumble. sends that name (only the name, never the recording or the chart) through our server to Anthropic's AI (Claude), which looks the song up on the web for what it's known by: key, tempo, time signature, tuning, capo and chord names, so the chart can be checked against them. you'll see "checking … on the web." while it happens. a song left untitled isn't looked up. our server keeps the answer against the song's name so the next look-up of the same song needs no new search, and counts look-ups per address (kept as a scrambled code, for a day). Anthropic handles the name under its own commercial terms and doesn't train its models on it.
- when you speak the words. the mic on the lyrics uses your browser's own speech recognition, which may send what it hears to your browser's maker (Apple for Safari, Google for Chrome) to turn it into text. strumble. doesn't receive or keep the sound, only the words that come back into the field.
- if you sign in. an account is optional, for keeping your songs in step across your devices. to sign in we email you a one-time link (so we keep your email address), or you continue with Google, which tells us your email address and an account number. once signed in, your songs, their recordings, your lists, practice history, scores and settings (except light or dark) are copied to our server in Australia and to each device you sign in on. a cookie keeps you signed in for up to 180 days; it's needed for this to work and isn't used for anything else. the only emails we send are the sign-in links you ask for. sign out on a device at any time; "delete my account." in your account removes the account and everything kept for it on our server straight away (the songs on your devices stay).
- analytics. we count how strumble. is used, through Google Tag Manager and Matomo: pages opened, which buttons and features are used, and the names of songs opened or imported, so we can see what works and what to improve. no screen recordings or session replays. this comes with the usual browser details (rough location from your IP address, device, browser). we don't use it to identify you, and we don't sell or share it for advertising.
- the web server and its protection. like any website, our hosting (Digital Pacific, in Australia) and Cloudflare, which protects and speeds up the site, see your IP address and the pages you request, and keep short-term logs.
- fonts and the picture reader. the page's font comes from Google Fonts, so Google sees that the page was loaded. the tool that reads photos of tab sheets is served from our own site and runs on your device; photos aren't uploaded.
- links to other sites. a few buttons open another site, like a YouTube search for an artist named on a scale. that site's own privacy terms apply once you're there; strumble. sends it nothing but the search.
- email. if you write to us, we keep your message and address to reply to you.
children and students.
strumble. is made for guitar students, many of them at school. it doesn't ask anyone for their name or age, and an account is optional: without one there's nothing to sign up for. if you're under 18, it's a good idea to check with a parent or teacher before sharing songs or signing in with Google.
cookies and storage.
strumble. uses your browser's storage to keep your songs and settings, which is what makes it work. if you sign in, a cookie keeps you signed in. analytics may set their own cookies. you can clear both in your browser at any time; doing so deletes your songs from that browser.
your choices.
- delete any song in the app, or clear your browser's data to remove everything.
- don't sign in, or use share, "read it with AI." or the lyrics mic, if you'd rather nothing is uploaded. everything else works without them. leave a song untitled until it's analysed and its name isn't looked up either; name it after.
- signed in, delete your account and everything kept for it from "your account." at the foot of the app.
- ask us to delete a shared song, or ask what we hold about you, at [email protected].
where data is kept.
shared songs, and the songs of anyone signed in, are stored on our server in Australia. analytics, Google, Anthropic and Cloudflare may process data in other countries under their own privacy terms.
changes.
if strumble. starts collecting something new, this page will say so first, with the date at the top updated. if you have a concern, write to [email protected]. you can also contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
